Long Beach Marathon

A Good Samaritan asked our hero, this ante-meridian (am), "How was the race? Did the Kenyan trip you in the final sprint again? Or was it an Ethiopian lying in wait?" Our hero simply explained, "All's well on the Western Front," he then turned and strolled away, content in body, mind and soul.

Running Story # 8 - Mans Best Friend?

This next true story began long ago. The Egyptians felt it necessary to domesticate and crossbreed the cannibus-rufus. Those wolves in sheep’s clothing immediately began infiltrating and manipulating, using that phony sheepish exterior, to move ever closer to their real objective. There is only one reason for their existence and I can see the real truth in their beady little eyes. The "dog," yes, the dog, their enlightenment lies in the chase and nirvana is achieved in the royal chomp on the roy… Continue

Running Dreams

“Jake’s Gone Wild” No, he’s not in the Art-Deco district of South Miami drinking and running around naked. Rather, the altered states of his alter-ego have been altering his ulterior motives.

My dreams have been sustained and wild of late. These altered states of slumber have me pondering the true position and meaning of these masquerades of reality. What can I learn? Cognitive scientists claim that only 10% of information that our mind takes in ever reaches conscious awareness.

So, dreams are… Continue

Story # 7 - La La Land Marathon Strategy

We're running the La La Land Marathon on Sunday. I emailed my friends the following message: I’ve been resting so much I now have blisters on my arse. I can’t wait to run! I’m chomping at the bit, a bat released from hell, a spider on the fly, a Romanian race horse at the gate, a Siberian, an Alaskan, perhaps a Malamute harnessed to a stationary sled, Gee! Haw! I can’t wait to run! I’ll probably take-off at sub 5 minute miles; Prefontane will be smiling at me from the grave. I'll run so fast I m… Continue

Run Story # 6 - La La Land Marathon

Dateline: LA Marathon --

Strategy: Conserve energy at LA for Catalina in 2 weeks --

Results: At the last moment I elected to replace my ball-and-chain with a beast-of-burden (Coach Gary). And heavens to murgatroit was he ever true to his calling. I harnessed the beast and we were off plodding along but only a little quicker then a full reverse. Ohhhh the agony of defeat, I didn’t even break a sweat all day, I ran so slow I could have walked the marathon faster. I pleaded, cajoled and bribed bu… Continue

How we live is so far removed from how we ought to live, that he who abandons what is done for what ought to be done, will rather bring about his own ruin than his preservation.

A ruler needs to be as smart as a fox and as strong as a lion. The lion cannot defend himself against snares and the fox cannot defend himself against wolves. Therefore, it is necessary to be a fox to discover the snares and a lion to terrify the wolves. - Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince, 1532
