Week Two
I had a MUCH better week. I am ready to do the work to prepare for this event. Period. I can't always do everything the first time, but I know it will come.
Monday, 9 November 2009
I got home from Key West at 11:30 PM last night and was in bed at 1:15 AM. I slept until 7:30 PM, the time my butt has to be in the office chair, because I was working from home. (The contractor was coming to install sprinklers.) I thought I would get up, make coffee, take a shower, and wander into work aft…

Week One
So I conclude this week feeling not all that positive about training...I'm doing a zillion things positive, and yet I don't feel all that positive.
Monday, 2 November 2009
Walked 2 blocks in AM (changing from time to distance, because I have no idea how long it really takes). No weights; right shoulder continues to be a problem.
No other activity; ran errands after work.
Tuesday, 3 November 2009
Walked 2 blocks in AM. In the dark I might add -- BIG moon still out.
I "packed" to run w…

So it begins. I'm excited for the challenge.

Week Zero
Monday, 26 October 2009
Walked 10 minutes in AM. No weights, there's something wrong with my right shoulder. Did stretch and balance exercises. Set out to run 2 miles (down to Atlantic and back). I ran about 1.5 miles and then walked a little, ran a little, walked a little, ran a little. There was slight foot pain in my right fo…

A Good Samaritan asked our hero, this ante-meridian (am), "How was the race? Did the Kenyan trip you in the final sprint again? Or was it an Ethiopian lying in wait?" Our hero simply explained, "All's well on the Western Front," he then turned and strolled away, content in body, mind and soul.

So, you can take piano lessons, and be able to play (more that you can now) when you're 50, or you can do nothing and you'll still eventually be 50.
Hard to believe that it's been nearly 21 weeks since I started running with Sole Runners...and here's the Long Beach Marathon day. Impossible to believe, if you know me at all, that I've been getting up at 5:45 AM on Saturdays EVERY WEEK the whole 21 weekends for the pleasure of running with a group. (OK, mostly walking for me, but the fact remains…

Next week is the Marathon. I'm going to do the half; my goal is to run and walk in less than 3 hours, which will be PR. I'm currently thinking that I'm going to walk to the 11 mile marker, then the route turns off the beach path and up Ocean.
Finished Week Two of the Whole Body Cleanse. Learned many things - not the least of which is that orange juice/lemon juice/apple juice, garlic, ginger, cayanne, salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil is not all that bad as a breakfast drink. Second - or really par…

Finished first week of full body cleanse. It's like a three ring circus getting out the door every morning -- so much prep work! I've lost 3 pounds. This week moved from fresh foods with protein on top (chicken, fish, tofu) to all veggie. The goal in the coming week is all raw foods, but you can add a cooked veggie soup in the PM if it makes the week better.
The diet "thing" is food combining. At the moment, I'm just eating what comes next on the menu without really thinking about anything else…

Great Run on Saturday!! Ran 51 minutes without pain (planned to run 50, but finished off the run and went to the pier). Walked 9 minutes further and then walked back for an hour. Rest of the group went out for 5 hours -- but I'm not going that far, so I didn't see the need this time.
Monday, 14 September 2009 - Walked 10 minutes in AM with weights. Went to Ales in the PM and got stretching exercises.
Tuesday, 15 September - Walk 10 minutes in AM with weights. Yoga in PM.
Wednesday, 16 Septemb…

Great Weekend. I'm so pleased. The week started off with a difficult (foot hurting) run and finished with an easy, no pain run. I don't know whether to credit me or Chi running, but whichever, I'm really pleased.
Monday, 7 September 2009 - Got up and drove over to San Pedro for "Conquer the Bridge". About eight Sole Runners were there "in shirt" for the event. Coaches Steve and Gary were both there. The event itself was chaotic at the start, about 500 people showed up to register at the event,…

So let me acknowledge right here that my training schedule has significantly lessened with the heat and the knowledge that I'm not going to try and run anything in particular for the Long Beach Marathon or 1/2 Marathon. In the beginning I was walking the distance or the time that the runners were doing. But -- and this from a person who is not usually too affected by heat -- I've really slowed down this summer. Maybe it's a foot acknowledgement.
Fall training with the Sole Runners starts 10/31…

finished this week in Illinois...so I'm actually writing this up on the 6th of September.
24 August, Monday - Walked 10 minues in AM with weight (15 oz cans of beans). 30 minute good workout out with weights with Mike. He gave me crunch-on-wobble-mat exercises to do at night.
25 August, Tuesday - Walked 10 minutes in AM with weights. Walked to and from car at Hollywood Bowl. Yoyo Ma and Placido Domingo. The Bowl was packed -- and Yoyo Ma was worth going to see on a weeknight.
26 August, Wedne…

FIRST PLACE (in my age group)
OK, I was the only person in the group, but there could have been more. I get the medal because I was willing to get up at o-dark-thirty on Sunday and go run (mostly) 3.1 miles.
Actually it is pretty cool.
Coach Steve rode his bike with me a little ways as I ran and walked. Here's what's interesting. I am wildly, massively self-motivated. I get most things done through my own initiative. Having this guy (who I like enormously and who is vastly more experienced tha…

This next true story began long ago. The Egyptians felt it necessary to domesticate and crossbreed the cannibus-rufus. Those wolves in sheep’s clothing immediately began infiltrating and manipulating, using that phony sheepish exterior, to move ever closer to their real objective. There is only one reason for their existence and I can see the real truth in their beady little eyes. The "dog," yes, the dog, their enlightenment lies in the chase and nirvana is achieved in the royal chomp on the roy…

“Jake’s Gone Wild” No, he’s not in the Art-Deco district of South Miami drinking and running around naked. Rather, the altered states of his alter-ego have been altering his ulterior motives.
My dreams have been sustained and wild of late. These altered states of slumber have me pondering the true position and meaning of these masquerades of reality. What can I learn? Cognitive scientists claim that only 10% of information that our mind takes in ever reaches conscious awareness.
So, dreams are…

Went fishing all week. There's some exercise in walking around the property -- and I walked for exercise (wearing all stretchy clothes). But I hurt my foot wearing a boot and kneeling (to cast), putting pressure on the top of my left foot, so that by Wednesday I want resting the foot all afternoon and fishing in tennis shoes.
I walked 2/3s of the "assignment" on Saturday, but couldn't stress the foot to do the whole 3.5 hour route.
I think, as we ae quickly coming up to September, that I'm goi…

We're running the La La Land Marathon on Sunday. I emailed my friends the following message: I’ve been resting so much I now have blisters on my arse. I can’t wait to run! I’m chomping at the bit, a bat released from hell, a spider on the fly, a Romanian race horse at the gate, a Siberian, an Alaskan, perhaps a Malamute harnessed to a stationary sled, Gee! Haw! I can’t wait to run! I’ll probably take-off at sub 5 minute miles; Prefontane will be smiling at me from the grave. I'll run so fast I m…

Dateline: LA Marathon --
Strategy: Conserve energy at LA for Catalina in 2 weeks --
Results: At the last moment I elected to replace my ball-and-chain with a beast-of-burden (Coach Gary). And heavens to murgatroit was he ever true to his calling. I harnessed the beast and we were off plodding along but only a little quicker then a full reverse. Ohhhh the agony of defeat, I didn’t even break a sweat all day, I ran so slow I could have walked the marathon faster. I pleaded, cajoled and bribed bu…

It was a run unlike any other. The island was humming with nostalgia, the elements purred in concert, the wind teased the grasslands, and in turn they playfully parried and danced a jig. The sky was clear, baby-blue and a sharp contrast to the greens and bountiful deep blue. Ole deep-blue was littered with white-caps, they dashed and bounced about and displayed unlimited potential all day.
I ran the first 10 miles with Steve and Kristi. Steve was in style, of course, he also gave us great coach…

The Exterra Boney Mountain Half Marathon trail run was a blistering run of unforgiving treachery and indescribable beauty. We tracked straight up mountain sides only to come screaming down the back side only to track straight up another mountain side only to come screaming down the other back side only to…… and so it went for 13.2 miles.
At the bell Steve took off like a pack of wild dingo’s were after him. Mike was running the 5K so he was of no consequence. Elsa looked fresh and daisy like as…
